April 2 – 7 is “Consider Your Career Options Week.” Think of it as a nudge to evaluate how you feel about your work. Ask yourself:

If money weren’t a factor and I knew I couldn’t fail… what would I do?

Think back to your childhood–when nothing seemed out of reach– to remember what was fun, what brought you the most joy and fulfillment. Perhaps you’ve always been an “artist at heart” or a designer or a writer, but due to life circumstances and persuasive voices around you, you followed a career path that now feels like drudgery.

A follow-up question would be:

Is my current career path bringing me joy and personal fulfillment? Is this what I want to do

for the rest of my life?

If the answer is no, what options do you have?

Here’s one. Have you ever considered creating your own business—something that perfectly suits you, utilizing your talents, abilities, and passion? Something you can run by yourself, exactly the way you want? Plenty of people have done just that, becoming “solopreneurs.”

When I mention solopreneurship to some of my clients, they imagine a relentless crop of problems popping up like weeds taking over their flower bed. But let me tell you, what was nearly impossible a generation ago has become easy and even commonplace today. With technology to save time and effort, and independent contractors to help with tasks you don’t have time to do, don’t know how to do, and/or don’t want to do, it is possible to have a successful business you can manage by yourself, without any of the complications that can arise with employees.

Many of my clients have created profitable, enjoyable, and meaningful businesses that don’t take over their lives or keep them up at night with worry. Even though they aren’t likely to become millionaires, they have developed a quality of life and personal satisfaction that is worth far more to them than money.

Below are just some of the benefits of becoming a solopreneur:

  1. Choose your line of work – do what you love!
  2. Be your true self – no corporate culture to fit into, just your own personality, individuality, and creativity.
  3. Set your own dress code: “Casual Friday” every day!
  4. Enjoy developing the variety of skills that running your own business requires, if you want to
  5. Or, choose to do only the things you like to do, and outsource the rest.
  6. Create a schedule and work location that works for you.
  7. Sit on the sofa instead of in traffic if you work from home.
  8. Eliminate unnecessary office distractions and get more done in less time.
  9. Save money – no need to dress for the office or go out for lunch.
  10. Define work/life satisfaction on your own terms – decide when you need to work and when family comes first.

Are you ready to take “the plunge” and think of alternatives to staying put doing a job that’s not really you? I would love to talk with you to explore if becoming a solopreneur would suit you better. I offer a FREE 30-minute phone consultation.

While you’re thinking, pick up a copy of my book, There’s No Place Like Working from Home, for more on what it would be like to create an at-home business of your very own.

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.
